“What is a tailored practice?”
A consistent yoga practice supports you physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Adapting your practice to meet your needs at each moment or juncture is vital. You’ll get the most from a practice customized for your present stage in life.
1 – Take a careful look at your intentions and needs.
2 – Make an honest evaluation of your strengths, limitations, and environment.
3 – What do you want to achieve with your asana practice?
You may want to work on a specific posture, because of its benefits. Or, perhaps discomfort in your sitting posture is interfering with your meditation practice, so you want to get rid of the stiffness in the legs or back to make your meditation more comfortable.
Your goals may be entirely therapeutic—strengthening a weak shoulder, balancing a curved spine, or hastening recovery from injury. Some of us may want a practice that increases our energy and enhances our general feeling of well-being. Or have emotional obstacles that need to be addressed with asana and pranayama practices.
Others may want to counter the negative side effects of other activities, such as sitting at a computer all day or participating in a sport like jogging, which strengthens some muscles and organ systems at the expense of others.
Or, ultimately, the goal of hatha yoga is to prepare you for higher spiritual practices by removing the obstacles in the physical body, eliminating physical and mental disturbances, and turning your attention inward.
